Taking Roof Photos for Insurance
Before-and-after photos make storm claims much simpler. A few minutes with a phone camera before storm season can save weeks of back-and-forth later.
Request a rooferBefore the season
Photograph every side of the roof from the ground, plus gutters, chimneys and skylights, while everything is in good shape.
Use the zoom
Zoom in on shingles, flashing and ridge caps from the yard rather than climbing up.
The attic
Take a few flashlight photos of the underside of the roof deck to show it's dry.
Keep records
Save the roof's age, the installer's paperwork, any warranty and past repair invoices together.
After a storm
Take the same shots again, plus close-ups of any damage and debris, before cleanup.
Date everything
Phones record the date, but a quick note of the storm's name or date helps.
Get an inspection
A roofer's written report with photos supports a claim. See roof inspections.
Talk to your insurer
Ask your agent what documentation they want before you need it.
A simple routine
Pick the same spots each year, such as each corner of the yard and the street in front, and take photos from them. Matching shots make before-and-after comparisons easy.
Store copies safely
Save photos and documents somewhere other than your phone alone, such as cloud storage or an emailed copy, so they survive if the phone is lost or damaged in a storm.
Small repairs count
Keep receipts for small repairs and maintenance too. They show the roof was looked after, which can help if an insurer questions the roof's condition.
Interior shots
Photograph upstairs ceilings and the tops of exterior walls too. If a leak appears after a storm, clear before-and-after pictures of the inside help show when the damage started.
