Fort Braden is a community in western Leon County, about 18 miles southwest of Tallahassee near the Ochlockonee River. It was first listed as a census place in 2020, with 1,045 people.
What that means for your roof
Homes out here are spread across wooded, rural lots, often with long drives and plenty of trees close to the house. After a storm, fallen limbs and debris are the main risk to roofs; see storm and wind damage.
Distance and planning
Rural properties can wait longer for a roofer after a big storm, when crews are busy in town. A tarp on hand, photos of the roof in good condition and a yearly check make it easier to get help quickly when you need it.
A Seminole War fort
Fort Braden was established on December 3, 1839, during the Second Seminole War, built by 1st Lieutenant Seth B. Thornton of Company G, 2nd U.S. Dragoons, near the Ochlockonee River just south of Polk Creek. It was named for Virginia Braden, wife of Dr. Joseph Braden of Tallahassee. The land around it is still heavily wooded, so trimming branches back from the roof and clearing needles from gutters are the most useful upkeep for homes here.
